Cisnădioara (German Michelsberg, Hungarian Kisdisznód) is a village situated in Sibiu County, Transylvania, Romania.
Saxons have built here the first Church in Romanic Style from Romania (XIIt h century). The Evangelic-Lutheran Church “Saint Michael” was firstly mentioned in 1223.The western portal, built as well in Romanic style, is very valuable through its rich articulations and its in stone sculptured décor (around the year 1260).The situation of the church and the decoration of the sculpted portal (1260) bespeak the influence of Rhineland architecture, which was present in the first part of the XIIIth century in Southern Transylvania.Sitting on a 100 m tall hill with abrupt sides, this is one of the most ancient peasant citadels of Transylvania. From this church proceeds the “Madonna with the baby” statue which is currently held in the Brukenthal Museum from Sibiu. From Cisnădioara one can go on a trip to the Cisnădioara fortress, the Răşinari village (the village where Octavian Goga and Emil Cioran were born), the station Păltiniş (situated at the altitude of 1450 m), Ocna Sibiului (where one can fiind lakes with salty water and treatment possibilities), the Brukenthal Museum from Sibiu or to Dumbrava Sibiului (where one can see a ZOO or visit the Village Museum). The roman fortress from Cisnădioara was built at the end of the XIIth century. The monument is mentioned in the document in which it is donated by magister Gocelinus to the Carta monastery. Inside the church there are the funeral monuments of the German and Austro-Hungarian Soldiers who died in the First World War.The fortification around the church is composed of an oval room. There are still partially some defensive towers and the holes through which stones were thrown at the enemies.
